Delivering healthy and sustainably produced food through the health system: building blocks for success

From 2–6 December 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) is hosting a series of virtual Health Talks on food systems under the theme “Food for Health”. This series will explore the role health systems can play as a platform for delivering healthier foods to those with economic and health vulnerabilities due to diet-related non-communicable diseases. This series illustrates the regulatory, programmatic and financial implications of this novel approach.

What to expect

The Health Talks series builds on WHO’s package of game changing food systems actions to promote enabling environments and provide more equitable access to healthier diets.

Supported by existing evidence and research and drawing on the experiences of various countries, the Health Talks will begin by examining the effectiveness of medically tailored meals, groceries and produce prescription programmes. The series will further explore the role and readiness of the workforce in delivering food, criteria for healthy food procurement by medical facilities, and civil society action in programme delivery and advocacy. In the last webinar, we will explore the role of social protection and of the private and philanthropic sectors to increase the affordability of healthier and sustainably produced food through the health system.  

Our speakers

Speakers will include over 30 international experts in the fields of health, food, social protection, and financial and economic systems, scientists, regulatory agencies and policymaking. These sessions will offer a platform for various stakeholders to discuss and debate a framework of inter-sectoral actions that can deliver healthier diets.
