With its origins in ancient India, yoga has evolved over thousands of years, encompassing physical postures, breath control, meditation, and ethical disciplines. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed internationally recognizing yoga’s significance during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. His speech emphasized yoga’s transformative power in promoting health and harmony.

Following this proposal, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 69/131 (2) in December 2014, officially proclaiming June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. This resolution received unprecedented support, with 177 member states co-sponsoring the initiative. The first IDY was celebrated on June 21, 2015, marking a significant milestone in recognizing yoga’s benefits globally. Since then, the day has been observed annually with various events, workshops, and activities worldwide.
