Since last summer, Iāve been getting into a lot more DIY (do it yourself) projects. These vary from cleaning products for the home, skincare, gifts, and makeup. My interest for this started with some DIY skincare. Iāve always been interested in this since a little girl. Iāve indulged in masks and stuff in my teen years. But Iāve been taking it more seriously this past year for many reasons. Here are some of themā¦
- Low waste or zero wasteĀ
- EconomicalĀ
- Non-toxic
- Better for the oceansĀ
- Creative outletĀ
- Better for the environment at largeĀ
- Simplify our lives
- Smarter consumerĀ
- Better for the next generationĀ
I posted a picture of my DIY deodorant a couple of months ago on Facebook and there were so many people who asked for the recipe. I got my recipe from Trash is for tossers. And put my own twist to it. It takes less than 5 minutes to make and has worked wonders for me and friends that Iāve shared it with. This DIY deodorant only has 5 ingredients and the portion will last you a long time. Saving you money in the long run and preventing plastic bottles in landfills and the oceans. So letās get straight to the recipe. I got most of my bulk DIY ingredients from Mountain Rose Herbs. I highly encourage you to pick organic, good quality ingredients for your DIYs. Your skin is your largest organ and your body absorbs 60% of what you put on it instantly.Ā
IngredientsĀ
- Arrowroot powderĀ ā 2 tablespoons
- Baking SodaĀ ā 1 tablespoon
- Unrefined Shea ButterĀ ā 1 tablespoon
- Unrefined coconut oilĀ ā 1 tablespoon
- Essential oils of your choice ā 5 to 10 drops
A lot of these ingredients are available in the bulk section at grocery stores. So check those out before you buy these ingredients in plastic packaging. Companies like Mountain Rose Herbs use compostable packaging for all orders. With every DIY, aim to go plastic free as possible. But it can be very challenging depending on where you live.Ā
On a double boiler, add your ingredients except for the essential oils. Once everything is melted and combined, take it off the heat carefully and let it cool for a couple of minutes. Add the essentials oils at this point and stir well. I use lavender and lemon, or eucalyptus and tea tree with lavender. But you can use any essential oil that you like. You make this without essentials oils too if youāre on a budget for your DIYs.Ā And your DIY deodorant is ready! Itās really that simple.
Pour into a glass mason jar and set it aside to cool and set for an hour. Depending on where you live, it may set sooner or take longer.Ā
To use, just scoop a little with your finger and rub into your underarms. A little goes a long way in this one. I live up in Seattle and have taken this everywhere with me. On long, sweaty dance days and post gym. This has kept my underarms clean and fresh all day. Its a great alternative to all the toxic, expensive and ineffective deodorants out there. I hope this works for you. Let me know if you try this at home in the comments below.Ā
